Declaration by FIFA / IFFHS

Prior to 1908, all footballing activities at the Olympic Games were demonstration sports only, and none of the matches played on Olympic grounds prior to 1908 fulfil the criteria of an official full "A" international. From 1908 to 1956, every encounter at the Olympic football tournaments was an official full "A" international, without exception. Starting with the qualifiers for the Olympic football tournament in 1960 (Rome), the criteria were changed fundamentally. From this time onward, Olympic football matches have had an altogether different character and can no longer be considered full "A" internationals.

The binding decision by FIFA / IFFHS, as well as the now complete and authenticated statistics of the Olympic football tournaments in 1908, 1912, 1920, 1924, 1928 and 1936, mean it is now possible to tabulate official records at the Olympic football tournaments, and 27 Olympic records. These are binding internationally and now appear on this website for the period from the first Olympic football tournament (1908) up to World War II (1939-1945). These will now be continued as the Olympic qualifying games are progressively included.

This decision by FIFA / IFFHS also is of fundamental  importance in determining the various world records for full "A" internationals, of which 55 records are kept on this website under the heading of Full "A" Internationals.
