South America‘s Club of the Century

As for Europe and the other continents, the IFFHS has determined the "South America‘s Club of the Century" and with it the including continental rankings for the 20th century exclusively on the basis of individual match results in the continental club competitions. The national competitions being merely a prerequisite to qualifying for the continental club competitions. The six decades before the introduction of the Copa Libertadores could not be ignored, and the first half of the 20th century was dominated by the play of the Argentinians and Uruguayans. Consequently the Copa Ricardo Aldao which was played from 1916 to 1947 - but not annually - and the Copa de Campeones (1948) and the Copa Atlántico de Clubes (1956) were taken into consideration. In the last two mentioned competitions the development of the standard of play of the Brazilian clubs was a feature.

The individual competitions of the CONMEBOL were classified in the same way as for Europe in the values awarded and an equal numbers of points given for an win or draw. Decisions by penalty shoot-out were not considered and there were no bonus points for a title or for individual rounds, because they do not reflect the real performance of the individual teams. The increasing number of competitions reflect the growing power of the teams from decade to decade. For to avoid possible national matches and continental-regional arrangements of matches in the first rounds and in the group phase (for to to have in the scoring continent-wide matches), only the individual results from the quarter-finals to the finals in all competitions were taken into consideration – as for the other continents. Intercontinental club competitions could not be taken into consideration

South America had 11 different competitions in the final four decades of the 20th century – and most of them no longer exist - a clear indication of a lack of far-sightedness and missing orientation of the CONMEBOL leadership. Eight of the total of 14 competitions were given the lowest rating, while only the matches of the Copa Libertadores received the highest rating. The matches of the Mercosur and Merconorte were scored equally, but in the lesser regarded Merconorte only the semi-finals and finals were taken into consideration. For the Copa Libertadores, were taken into consideration only 50 % of the yield of points from the directly before the semi-finals played Segunda Fase (1962-1970). From 1971-1987 were taken into consideration all matches from Semi-finals (A y B), from 1988-1995 all matches from the Tercera Fase and from 1996-2000 from the Cuartos de final until finals each. This provided an equal opportunity for all teams over about four decades.

CA River Plate Buenos Aires led the ranking for the continent in 1960, but after seven decades South America‘s club ranking was led by two clubs from Montevideo - CA Peñarol and Club Nacional de Football - ahead of Santos FC and followed by five Argentinian clubs: CA River Plate Buenos Aires, CA Estudiantes de La Plata, CA Independiente Avellaneda, CA Boca Juniors Buenos Aires and Racing Club Avellaneda. In the 1970s the years were dominated above all by CA Independiente Avellaneda and then EC Cruzeiro Belo Horizonte, CA Boca Juniors Buenos Aires und C Nacional de F Montevideo. CA Peñarol lost more than the half of its points advantage to the second-placed club, but remained the leader in 1980 ahead of Independiente Avellaneda, the great local rivals from Montevideo and three Argentinian clubs.

The 1980s were again dominated by the two big clubs from Montevideo as well as Olmpia Asunción in South America, while both Brazilian clubs Santos FC and SE Palmeiras São Paulo ended empty. CR Flamengo Rio de Janeiro, Grêmio FB Porto-Alegrense and CD Cobreloa Calama were catapulted from nowhere to the 12th - 15th places. South America‘s "Top ten" (1901-1990) were CA Peñarol Montevideo ahead of C Nacional de F Montevideo, CA Independiente Avellaneda, CA River Plate Buenos Aires, CA Boca Juniors Buenos Aires, FC Olimpia Asunción, CA Estudiantes de La Plata, EC Cruzeiro Belo Horizonte, CD América Cali and Racing Club Avellaneda.

In the 1990s only SE Palmeiras achieved a return to the "Top 10", while local rival São Paulo FC for the first time achieved a place among the best ten clubs. Five clubs changed their positions with each other. CA Peñarol took the honours with an unexpectly large lead to become "South America‘s Club of the Century". That is the result a realistic analysis, which is not tainted by subjected values. So CA Peñarol’s title is a comparable achievement with that of Real Madrid in Europe. The frequency of qualifying for continental competitions is easier in less strong leagues – but, in each case, only the matches among the last 8 teams of a continental competition are the real gauge for the determining the continent’s clubs of the century.
